FCP 4.5 is so old it predates Apple Intermediate Code, ProRes and HDV.

FCP can't play (decode) H264 MP4s for shit but it can still import them. I even tried exporting from QuickTime as a .m4v - same error! Should none of that work, you can try using the program MPEGStreamclip to convert the video files to another file format (ProRes, if possible). It hardly works at all with h.264, unless you're cutting :30's or :60's, I wouldn't bother.
